Focus on Sitting
June 19, 2018, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
A Feldenkrais Method Awareness Through Movement (ATM) workshop with Nick Strauss-Klein at The Marsh, in Minnetonka, MN, just off I-494
“Movement is life. Life is a process. Improve the quality of the process and you improve the quality of life itself.”
– Moshe Feldenkrais, D. Sci., 1904-1984
Whether in the car, at our desk, or even at home on the couch, modern life expects us to sit a lot, while modern science shows it’s hurting us. Even though we know that poor sitting fatigues our bodies and minds, we may not know how to start making improvements. Despite our discomfort we may not be fully present with how we sit.
This workshop offers practical movement lessons and advice, both designed to connect your mind — your full human intelligence, awareness, and sensitivity — to the body mechanics of better sitting. It’s designed to teach you to sit with greater intention and to expand your range of options, so you can learn more dynamic, sustainable, and pleasurable sitting practices.
All Nick’s workshops include a follow-up email for participants with notes from the workshop, and free text and audio resources to continue your learning at home.

Open to the public, ages 16+. No experience necessary. The only prerequisites are being able to safely get down to lie on a mat on the floor and get back up again, and fluency in aural English (group Feldenkrais is taught verbally, not with visual modeling; instead of copying the instructor you learn to move in the best way for you). Movement explorations are done gently and reflectively, usually while lying on a mat in various positions.
If your habitual ways of moving are working against you, to the point that you are breaking down more than you are able to restore yourself, then this is the class for you. But it is also for any person, of any movement skill level, who wants to learn how to attend more deeply to how they create, initiate, and engage in movement. These lessons are highly integrative in helping you move with the quality and ease you want for your life.
A few of the typical benefits of regular Feldenkrais study:
- Reduce pain, tension, and fatigue as you move with more skill and greater freedom
- Improve your posture and enjoy movement more
- Move and exercise with a greater sense of integrated, whole body coordination
- Develop better, more balanced, and more flexible ways of supporting yourself

A recent student in Nick’s Feldenkrais classes at The Marsh, Amanda Straka, 38, RYT, CPT, Thai Massage Therapist, says
I found Nick’s course valuable and eye opening. I am a instructor of movement myself, and this was my first experience with the Feldenkrais Method. It was a holistic and enlightening way to engage body/mind/breath connection. Nick is incredibly knowledgeable about his material, clear and concise in his direction, and truly passionate about what he teaches. No matter what your moving and/or healing path is, try his class, it open a whole new awareness for you.
